Alpha and the Week Ahead

Whether it was Alan Greenspan’s comments late in trading session Wednesday when he stated that the lofty level of the Chinese equity markets is unsustainable or investor’s preparing for the long Memorial Day weekend, this week the Bull’s clearly elected to take their profits and go to the shore for a well deserved three day break.

In Friday’s slow pre-holiday trading session, stocks recovered some ground from Thursday’s declines aided by yet another wave of M&A activity which re-ignited positive moods among investors. The DJIA gained 66.15 points (+0.49%) to close at 13507.28. The S&P 500 gained 8.22 points (+0.55%) at 1515.73 while the NASDAQ rose 19.27 points (+0.76%) to close at 2557.19.
A few of you may have received an invite to join last.fm from me a few days ago. After reading that last.fm was to be purchased by CBS I decided to get off my duff and check out the fine site. The premise is simple; install the last.fm client and start listening to music. The site will track the music you listen to and over time formulate a “profile” of sorts. Based on your listen habits it can recommend other songs, bands or even user’s who have similar tastes in music. That may sound great but the real “killer feature” of last.fm is that you can sample thousands of tracks as well as tune into other user’s “stations” and hear what they are listening too.

He was the son of a Prostitute Mom and his grandmother was the madam. He indulged in drugs for most of his life, which many famous people do anyway. But the thing that really got to me is that he was married five times and beat his wives. How can we look up to someone like that? How can we thank someone like that? If you’re a man and you beat woman, you should be put in jail. Instead, people are celebrating his life for his accomplishments and no one has mentioned that he was a wife beater. I think people should know and why? There are thousands of men out there that beat their wives and some even take it a step further. For anyone who does this, your all freaking cowards, bottom line.

So we can thank Richard Pryor for his comedic talent but that’s it. He was a coward as well and should always be known as one. Don’t beat women, it’s not worth it and it’s flat out classless.

Red Wings Player Happy to Be Alive

November 21 Jiri Fischer was laid out on the ice trying to be revived by a defibrillator while his heart stopped for an unknown amount of time. It’s not even a month later and he is doing much better, but not sure if he will play hockey again. Today in a press conference he talked about how happy he is to have a second chance.
A friend of mine who seems to find all of these cool sites months before everyone else was already a member so I started poking around with the social networking aspect of the site.

For starters radio sucks and it’s harder than ever to find new music that’s somewhere between mega-corporate rehash and something someone recorded in their basement. The concept of a music directory or discovery site isn’t new, in fact MP3.Com was doing this nearly ten years ago. The new and cool feature of last.fm is that you can actually find “friends” who like the same music as you and best of all it’s done automatically.
However, Friday’s gains were not enough to make up the losses from the previous four trading days. All three major indexes were down for the week. The DJIA had its seven week winning streak snapped, down 0.36% for the week. The S&P 500 declined 0.46% for the week after failing to break its previous closing record on multiple tries. The NASDAQ declined for a third straight week closing at and was off 0.05% for the week.

Ahh, a band was playing. A loose confederacy of acquaintances banging out old Grateful Dead and Steppenwolf tunes. Dr. Bob leans toward me beside the campfire. Like the intentionally helpful neighbor in “The Graduate” he confides, “Rock and roll retirement homes.”

“What, Dr. Bob?”

“That’s what my generation is going to need. Rock and roll retirement homes, where they pipe in this stuff while we age on, little brother.”
So how does the site make money? By offering a extended and advanced features for subscribers for a fee (which isn’t cheap). While the bulk of users will only use the free features the “cool kids” will likely spring for the fee that allows you to become your own Internet radio station. Which leads me to the user base for this site. In all honesty I think that a site like last.fm will attract two kinds of users.

These are the guys (and gals) who always pick up the next big hit band before they go mainstream, in other words they are the people we music lovers envy. The rest of last.fm’s user base is likely comprised of folks like you and me who don’t have the time to research new music but love to see what the cool kids are listening to and possibly give it a try. It seems that this foursome has taken the world by storm. They are well known as the hustling foursome. If you happen to see them at your local golf course, watch out!!! Please stay away from them.

Richard Pryor Dead at 65

I really didn’t know a whole lot about Richard Pryor. I saw Brewster’s Millions and thought it was a cool movie but his comedy acts I was never allowed to watch in the 70’s or 80’s because I wasn’t old enough. He died recently of a heart attack and had a long fight with MS. I’ve seen so many sports figures, comedians etc…reach out to show their appreciation for Richard Pryor. He changed the comedic world for what it is today. The Chris Rocks, Eddie Murphy’s, he made it better and a whole lot easier for them to do their thing. On the surface you would think that this guy is a saint and a man to look up to. But, I read some troublesome articles on him today.

At the time, I wrote that off as old hippie talk, but now I realize the astuteness of the good Dr.: The baby boomers, there’s a bunch of them, and marketers of most products and services need to take a close look at them.

As we scarcer GenX’ers take their jobs and the wheel of business and society (including the debt and other associated baggage), we need to study these folks closely. The rock and roll retirement home is not just a business proposition. Word to your Moms.
